1. How much did the CCG spend per dementia patient in the financial years a) 2015-16 b) 2014-15 and c) 2013-14?
It is not possible to give the exact spend per dementia patient over the requested three financial years. Dementia patients will apart from services specifically commissioned for people with dementia, also use services like district nursing, hospital care, dentist, podiatry, incontinence service and continuing health care funding. We don’t collect information on the percentage of dementia patients using these more generic health care services and are therefore not able to indicate all spend for patients related to their dementia condition.
However, with regards to specific dementia commissioned care services, the spending for NHS Stockport CCG was as follows:
a) 2015-16 | b) 2014-15 | c) 2013-14
Memory service | £242,000 | £322,000 | £355,000 |
CQUIN – dementia | £200,000
Young Onset Dementia | £6,000 | £10,000
Saffron ward (50% dementia patients) | £598,000 | £598,000 | £299,000 |
GP local enhanced service | £100,000 | £100,000 | £50,000 |
Dementia end of life facilitator | £50,000 | £50,000
Alzheimer’s Society grant for vascular dementia | £35,000 | £35,000 | £18,000 |
Total spend – dementia specific commissioned services | £1,231,000 | £1,115,000 | £722,000 |
Dementia prevalence for Stockport | 3668 people | 3725 people | 3728 people |
Spend per patient (based on prevalence) for specific commissioned dementia services | £336 | £299 | £194 |
In addition, Dementia UK – update (Alzheimer’s Society, 2014) gives an indication how costs are divided on a national basis: The overall economic impact of dementia in the UK is £26.3 billion. This works out at an average annual cost of £32,250 per person with dementia. This consists of:
£4.3 billion of healthcare costs
£10.3 billion of social care of which:
£4.5 billion spent on publically-funded social care
£5.8 billion spent on privately-funded social care
£11.6 billion of unpaid care
£111 million on other dementia costs
The £11.6 billion cost of the 1.34 billion hours of unpaid carer provided each year has been calculated on the basis of the replacement and opportunity costs of this care.
The total of £26.3 billion is 24% higher than the figure reported in the first edition of Dementia UK (Alzheimer’s Society, 2007). Most of the difference is driven by the increase in numbers of people with dementia.
