A young apprentice healthcare assistant at a GP practice in Stockport has scooped a top award as Greater Manchester’s Apprentice of the Year.
Rezwana Raidah, who works at Alvanley Family Practice in Woodley, was up against hundreds of others from the region but her outstanding commitment and warm personality meant she stood out from the crowd.
She was one of 14 people honoured at the first ever Greater Manchester Health and Care Champion Awards created to recognise members of the health and care workforce who regularly go above and beyond to improve the health and wellbeing of the people in the region. The event, earlier this month, was hosted by BBC North West Tonight’s Annabel Tiffin.
Rezwana joined Alvanley as a 16 year old, straight from school, on an 18 month clerical apprenticeship but was so loved, by staff and patients alike, that when it came to an end, the practice was desperate to keep her on.
They realised she was keen to go into nursing, but didn’t have the necessary qualifications, so they created a healthcare assistant apprenticeship for her and have been supporting and encouraging her to pass the needed exams.
And the practice’s faith in Rezwana was well founded as she’s thriving in her new role supporting the clinical team with things like blood tests and health screening whilst becoming a firm favourite of patients.
Practice Manager Kay Keane said “We are all so proud of Rez. She works so hard but always has time for everyone. She lights up the surgery with her warm, infectious smile.
“We’ve watched her grow from a shy teenager into a wonderful, young woman and we know she has an exciting career ahead of her.”
Rezwana’s apprenticeship ends in December and she hopes in the near future to go to university to train as a nurse.
