A Stockport GP had the best possible preparation for his charity 270 mile bike ride – tips from gold medallists Laura Trott and Jason Kenny.
Dr Ranjit Gill was on his way down to London to start the gruelling trek when he bumped into the two Olympic heroes on the train.
And Ranjit couldn’t resist getting a few last minute tips from the couple who know more than a thing or two when it comes to cycling!
Ranjit, who is the Chief Clinical Officer from Stockport CCG as well as a local GP, said “You’d think they’d be fed up of people wanting to talk to them but they were really friendly and very impressed by our mission.
“They both wished us the best of luck but when Laura told us she’d only ever cycled 100 miles in one day herself once, I suddenly realised what a huge task we’d taken on!”
Ranjit is one of a team of 4 from Stockport taking part in the 4 Countries Cycle Challenge for the charity Kidneys for Life to raise funds for kidney transplant research at Manchester Royal Infirmary and Manchester Medical School.
The journey started in Dover on Thursday (1st Sept) and they crossed the finish line on Sunday (4th Sept) in Amsterdam having ridden through France and Belgium on the way.
Added Ranjit “I have to admit that I’m a little saddle sore now but it is such a good cause that it is well worth it.”
The other three Stockport residents in the team also feeling the pain were Monika Baji, an anaesthetic nurse at Stepping Hill Hospital, Afshin Tavakoli, a renal transplant surgeon at Manchester Royal Infirmary, and Bessam Farjo, a hair transplant surgeon.
Kidneys for Life raises funds for research into kidney disease, dialysis and transplantation. The charity is based at Manchester Royal Infirmary.
