A Stockport GP practice has been awarded the highest accolade possible for the quality of care it offers its Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and transgendered patients.
Park View surgery in Reddish was presented with a Gold Standard award by Laurence Webb, from the LGBT Foundation – a national charity delivering a wide range of services LGBT communities.
The Pride in Practice award[1] was developed by the Foundation to allow LGB people to trust their GP practice and to be open and honest about their sexual orientation with health professionals.
Park View is the first surgery in Stockport to receive the Gold standard award and it reflects their commitment to assuring that their LGBT patients are treated fairly, have access to appropriate healthcare services and feel able to discuss health issues with practice staff.
To be awarded gold, a practice needs to meet at least 25 of the 27 standards set out by the LGBT Foundation.
The standards include ensuring that questions are asked in an inclusive way, that sexual orientation monitoring is effective and a series of small practice changes that help LGBT patients feel more welcome and improve their relationship with their GP Practice.
Dr Karen McEwan, GP at Park View, said “We’re really proud to receive this award and we hope it will encourage others to follow suit”.
The Pride in Practice award is also endorsed by Royal College of General Practitioners (RCGP).
