Get on course to tackle diabetes for a healthier you

Stockport residents, who have been invited by their GP to take part in a free course to help prevent type 2 diabetes, are being urged to take up the offer.

Diabetes is a serious condition that, if not managed properly, can lead to major health problems so preventing people from becoming diabetic in the first place is really important.

Type 2 diabetes is largely caused by lifestyle factors such as poor diet, lack of exercise and being overweight. In Stockport it’s estimated that over 27,000 people are at risk of developing the condition.

These patients are being sent letters and text reminders by their GP practice inviting them to take part in a “Healthier You” programme.

Those who join the free programme will get group-based local sessions supporting them to become more active, eat healthier and draw up long term goals to reduce their risk of developing the disease.

The programme started last month (July) and will eventually be rolled out to all areas of Stockport by the end of next year.

Dr Vicci Owen Smith, Clinical Director of Public Health at NHS Stockport CCG said “There are too many people in Stockport on the cusp of developing Type 2 diabetes, which is largely preventable.

“GP practice teams already offer people great support to make changes to protect their health, but these bespoke courses will give people that extra bit of help.

“I’d urge anyone who has been offered the programme to go along. You’ll learn so much that will help you to change and get great support along the way.”

Cllr Tom McGee, Stockport Council’s Cabinet Member for Health said “It is estimated that 27,000 people in Stockport are at risk of developing type 2 diabetes and there are already 14,600 people who are diagnosed with the condition. I would strongly encourage people who are invited by their GP to take up the offer of this free life changing programme.”
