Get Moving in Stockport

Stockport residents are being urged to make the most of the opportunities in the borough to get active and make a pledge to “Get Moving” this summer.

The call comes following the endorsement of the four year plan for Physical Activity and Sport “GM Moving” by Greater Manchester Mayor Andy Burnham.

There is a wide range of physical activity opportunities across Stockport and becoming more active does not have to be complicated or expensive. Stockport has many excellent parks greenspaces and play areas and walking and cycling trails.

More structured activity is also available at Stockport’s many leisure centres or gyms and
Stockport’s Leisure Key scheme gives access to discounts at Life Leisure Facilities in the area for those who meet the criteria.

Councillor Tom McGee, Stockport Council’s Cabinet Member for Health said: “Whether it’s to get fit, boost your health and wellbeing, socialise with friends or help the environment by reducing traffic emissions and congestion within the town, the benefits of being physically active are unlimited.”

Malcolm McPhail, of Life Leisure, said: “I would encourage families to check out the activities available. We have plenty of summer camps available across Stockport which are sure to keep the kids active and entertained and with the vast array of indoor and outdoor classes and programmes both at Life Leisure centres and out in the community, there is definitely something for everyone, no matter their level of fitness.

“We are also delighted to announce we will be running fantastic water safety sessions along with a free swim this summer at Life Leisure pools, which are being offered free to everyone in Stockport. The sessions are being held to highlight the importance of keeping safe in the water as at this time of year the incidence of water related accidents rises with the hotter weather. We will be announcing arrangements soon, so watch this space.”
