Dementia Action Week

Many of us worry about ‘saying the wrong thing’ to someone with dementia, yet experts tell us that a friendly face or listening ear can make the world of difference.

So for Dementia Action Week, everyone is being encouraged to take action by starting a conversation; whether it’s calling a relative with dementia or visiting a neighbour, it’s time to start talking.

If you live in Stockport and know or are caring for someone with dementia, there is plenty of help available to give you a better understanding of how to support people with the disease to live well.

There are regular drop-ins, dementia cafes and advice sessions around the borough and both the Alzheimer’s Society or Stockport Signpost for Carers have all the details you need to access these.

But if you are caring for a loved one with dementia, then there will come a time in the journey when the person begins to experience more difficulties.

As their needs change, you may find that you are struggling more and could benefit from extra advice and support.

That is when Stockport Dementia Care Training will be there for you. They run a four session course called Learning More About Dementia, designed to give you a greater understanding of the changes taking place.

You’ll learn how better to deal with the changes and it will enable you to help the person you care for live as well as possible.

You’ll also meet people in the same situation as you in a friendly, supportive atmosphere and on previous courses people have often found making those connections really important.

The sessions are run on consecutive Tuesday evenings, 7pm to 9pm, and the next course begins on the 2nd July at The Heatons Centre in Thornfield Road, Heaton Moor.

Refreshments will be provided and you may be able to get help with transport if you need it.
