Band together to help beat cancer

Stockport residents are being urged to help beat cancer by wearing a Cancer Research UK Unity Band in support World Cancer Day on 4th February.

Just about everyone is touched by cancer at some point in their life. Research shows that half of everyone born after 1960 will be diagnosed with cancer during their lifetime.

In Stockport, cancer is responsible for around a third of all deaths with about 1,700 new cancer cases diagnosed here each year.

But, with new treatments and an emphasis on early diagnosis, the number of people surviving cancer has doubled since the early 1070s.

And in fact Stockport is rated as one of the top seven places in the country for its cancer care.

However there’s still massive room for improvement nationally, and buying a Unity Band is one way to help fund life-saving research top help beat cancer sooner.

The Unity Band features a classic reef knot design to symbolise the strength of people coming together to unite against cancer.

NHS Stockport CCG’s Chair Jane Crombleholme and Stockport Council’s Cabinet Member for Health, Councillor Tom McGee, were photographed wearing their Unity Bands.

Said Jane “We know that you’re chances of surviving cancer are far greater if it’s caught early so anything we can do to raise awareness is important.”

Cllr McGee added “I’m wearing my Unity Band this World Cancer Day to show solidarity with everyone whose life has been touched by cancer.”

The Cancer Research Unity Bands are available to buy online or in Cancer Research UK shops for £2
