First Five Peer Support Group for GPs

Introducing Stockport First Five! We are delighted to be working alongside GM Training Hub and Stockport CCG Learning and Development Team, to set up a peer support group for General Practitioners who are either working or living in Stockport and within the first five years since graduating from the GPVTS scheme. Life as a newly qualified GP can be exciting, daunting and challenging, and we are here to ensure we all support each other.  Please Click here for further details which contains information about the format of the group and the GPs who will be leading it.  Details of how to join can be found on Facebook by searching for Stockport First Five GPs or email Varshini.rajakulendran@nhs.net or tim.merchant@nhs.net

GP Career Suppport Hub

NHS England and NHS Improvement want to ensure GPs are aware of the opportunities and funding available to them in their careers and to reinforce the investment that is being made to recruit and retain valued GPs across England. This GP Career Support Hub has been created as a central information point with resources to support GPs at varying stages of their career – from newly qualified doctors to those approaching the end of their career. It provides information, guidance and support on career development, learning, mentoring, appraisals, career options/flexibility, wellbeing, pay and pensions to enable GPs to realise fulfilling, rewarding and challenging careers in general practice. It also includes direct links to relevant GP websites such as the BMA. LMC, HEE, NHSEI, RCGP as well as COVID-19 information for GPs. The discussion forum provides a safe space for mutual peer support and information sharing amongst GPs at different stages of their career and you can share best practice or learn from others in our blog.  Use this link to access, it’s free but you do have to register – GP Career Support Hub – FutureNHS Collaboration Platform

GP Partnership Scheme

The New to Partnership Payment Scheme provides an opportunity for eligible health care professionals to become a partner at your GP practice and in return receive up to £20,000 plus a contribution towards on-costs of up to £4,000 (for a full time participant). The funding is available to support establishment as a partner, as well as up to £3,000 in a training fund to develop non-clinical partnership skills. In order to participate in the scheme, applicants will be required to submit an application form and supplementary evidence to us and meet the eligibility criteria.  Eligible roles are General Practitioners, Nurses (including Advanced Nurse Practitioners), Pharmacists, Pharmacy Technicians, Physiotherapists, Paramedics, Midwifes, Dietitians, Podiatrists, Occupational Therapists, Mental Health Practitioners working in general practice.

The overarching aim of the scheme is to grow the number of partners working in primary care, stabilising the partnership model and helping to increase clinicians’ participation levels so that primary medical care and the patients it serves have access to the workforce they need. A guide to the scheme, frequently asked questions and the application form can be found on their website. If you have any queries, please contact the team.

Professional Education and Development (PED) Course

The course aims to help you achieve your goals and improve your life as you ride the roller-coaster of general practice. The course will motivate you and develop your resilience and leadership skills.  PED is aimed at GPs in the Health Education England (HEE) North West area who have a regular (non-locum) position at a practice be it as a partner or salaried.

PED educational costs are supported by HEE and participants are asked to contribute £480 towards the course fees and £50.00 per night towards the residential costs (if they are held). There are additional fees for UCLan registration and for the optional leadership module

Closing date for applications: 10th September 2021 with priority being given to early applicants.    For further information contact Hannah and Stephanie at the Primary Care School or you can email one of the tutors primarycareschool.nw@hee.nhs.uk

Information for Newly Qualified GPs

Introduction

The information available here will help guide you through the range of opportunities available to newly qualified GPs in the North West, including details for who to contact to find out more.

GP Fellowships

There are two kinds of GP Fellowship – NHSE and HEE

NHSE Fellowship

If you are within 12 months of qualifying your CCT then you could benefit from the GMTH NHSE GP Fellowship Program, a fantastic opportunity offering paid CPD sessions of £7,200 per year (pro rata).  Supporting all those eligible, newly qualified GPs that are in substantive, salaried or partner positions within Greater Manchester, the GP Fellowship is a 2 year programme of support aimed at welcoming GPs into general practice and their Primary Care Network and allowing for both personal and professional growth. Throughout the 2 years you will receive monthly 1 hour mentorship from an experienced GP, connection with a peer network, learning and development podcasts and masterclasses, additional coaching, and portfolio development opportunities all designed to support your transition from a GPST to a GP – added to all that, there are no essays and no examinations at the end.  Further information regarding the Fellowship can be  found here

HEE GP Fellowships – 2022/23

Up to 28 post-CCT fellows can be supported by HEE NW this year. This is in addition to the fellowships that will be supported by NHS England & NHS Improvement and there may be some shared support for both approaches.
The NHSE/I model is being coordinated by Training Hubs and details will be shared with NW practices in due course.  Aims of the HEE Post-CCT Fellowship Programme:

• Meet regional and local population health needs by:
o Aligning with STP (Sustainability and Transformation Partnership)/ICS (Integrated Care System) or other locally identified priorities
o Contributing to the delivery of high-quality health care
o Addressing unequal workforce distribution
o Reducing health inequalities
• Making the GP role more attractive and helping “deliver the promise” of a varied and stimulating career
• Contributing to the development of future GP system leaders

Bidding partner organisations should be North West-based health organisations within the health, social or voluntary sectors.  Fellows appointed by successful organisations should be within the first five years of achieving their CCT, hold a license to practice with the GMC and have full inclusion on the National Medical Perfomer List.

GP fellowships should usually include a minimum of four clinical sessions in primary care and two sessions of personal development time per week.  An integrated Fellowship offering opportunities to develop across clinical systems will usually  include a minimum of three clinical sessions in primary care, and a minimum of two sessions in  another clinical sphere of work and two sessions of personal development time per week.  Fellowships offering the opportunity to develop a specific area of work such as frailty, mental health, dermatology or other clinical or leadership areas will be encouraged.
Personal development time should be self-directed by the fellow in areas of relevance to their fellowship, e.g. quality improvement activities, attendance at courses/university, time spent shadowing or in other organisations, attendance at education events locally such as Post CCT
fellow support, Higher Professional Education (HPE) or Professional Education and Development (PED).  Host practices and organisations should consider how the fellows will be mentored and supported to get the best from the scheme, for example a named GP or lead who might meet on a regular (for example monthly) basis to review progress and provide support.  Information can be found here – HEE NW 22-23 Post CCT Fellowship Information

Bids can be submitted to HEE NW using this link – 2022/23 Post-CCT Fellowship Application Form
