Veterans’ Health (e-learning)

Target Audience/Eligibility Criteria

This module is for all members of the primary care team.

Course Overview

There are 2.03 million veterans in England, Wales and Scotland combined; many have medical needs, which are sometimes different to those of the general population. Veterans may be reluctant to seek help or talk about their problems, which means they do not always access care, support and treatments available. Veterans may think that ‘civilians’ do not understand military culture or are not aware of the options for help and services that are available. This module aims to help all members of the primary care team understand the needs of veterans and the available resources such as the RCGP ‘Veteran Friendly GP Accreditation Programme’

Benefits of Veteran Friendly Accreditation – Screencast – The Veteran Friendly GP Accreditation Scheme by the Royal College of GPs and NHS England is a quick-to-implement, free support programme for GP practices in England that will enable you and your practice team to easily identify, understand and support veterans and, where appropriate, refer them to specialist healthcare services designed especially for them. This short screencast introduces the issues around veterans’ health and the benefits of the Veteran Friendly Accreditation GP Scheme.

What makes Veterans different from other patients? – podcast – This podcast is part of a veteran’s health eLearning course, which aims to educate GPs and primary care teams as to why veterans are a special group. In this podcast, Dr Emily Brookes talks to Jon Lynn, a military veteran, about how a veteran patient may present differently in their health-seeking behaviours and how identifying whether a patient is a veteran can enable healthcare professionals to provide good healthcare to this patient group.

The Royal College of General Practitioners has developed the Veteran Friendly GP Accreditation scheme. This programme will improve the healthcare of veterans and their families, by giving a better understanding of the special needs of this population and resources available to help. Thousands of NHS England Practices are now successfully accredited, with numbers of accredited practices rapidly growing.
