Think Carer – Carer Champions Training

Target Audience/Eligibility Criteria

This training is targeted at all clinical and non-clinical staff working in Stockport General Practice who want to learn more about Carers and how they can help them and who want to become Carer Champions in their workplace, community or group.

Course Aim

The aim is to increase awareness of the wide range of unpaid carers and the vital roles they play. Participants learn how to identify carers, often hidden in plain sight and how to support them effectively. The course also explores the challenges carers face and equips champions with the tools and confidence to help carers thrive, both in their caring role and beyond. It’s an essential step in creating carer-friendly environments that truly value and support unpaid carers

Learning Objectives

By the end of this course, participants will be able to:

  • Define who unpaid carers are, including adult and young carers and explain the diverse range of caring roles and responsibilities
  • Recognise the signs that may indicate someone is an unpaid carer in a workplace, community or service setting
  • Describe the emotional, physical and financial impact of caring on individuals and understand why timely support is cruical
  • Outline the key provisions of the Care Act and Carer’s Leave Act and how to apply to carers in everyday life and employment
  • Identify tools and local services available to support carers, including Signpost’s Carer Assessment, Connecting Carers Card and other practical resources
  • Demonstrate how to sensitively initiate conversations with individuals who may be carers and effectively signpost them to relevant support
  • Promote carer-friendly practices in workplaces, communities and groups by creating inclusive, informed environments
  • Explain the unique needs of young carers, the impact of caring on their development and how professionals can respond appropriately
  • Apply professional curiosity to identify hidden carers through everyday interactions and assessments
  • Commit to an action plan as a Carer Champion, outlining how they will raise awareness, identify carers and promote support
