Suture and Staples Removal Training

Target Audience/Eligibility Criteria

This course is suitable for Nurse Practitioners, Practice Nurses, Assistant Practitioners, Nurse Associates and HCAs who hold NVQ Level 3 in Health (or equivalent).

Course Aim

The course aims to provide delegates with the knowledge and skills to remove sutures and staples from surgical wounds. Unregistered healthcare support workers will be expected to complete a competency assessment in their practice following the training.

Course Content

Upon successful completion of the course delegates will be able to:

  • Identify different types of wound closure
  • Understand the wound healing process
  • Know the length of time different sutures and clips can be used for
  • Describe the equipment required to remove sutures and staples
  • Identify when a wound has become infected
  • Correctly complete the relevant documentation
  • Provide up to date advice and care for patients with sutures or staples
