Stockport has now moved from 5/10 CCGs for breast screening uptake to 7/10 – 10 being the lowest. This is very concerning and a programme of work to address this issue is underway. For bowel and cervical screening Stockport ranks first and second respectively, highlighting breast screening as a clear outlier.
How primary care can support to improve uptake:
- An EMIS pop-up is available to highlight non-attenders. The value of a clinician encouraging attendance is well documented. We are happy to come into practice to add this on for you
- Six weeks prior to patients being screened, the provider (SECBSS, South East Cheshire Breast Screening Service) sends an email to practice managers to alert the practice that patients will be called. You could use this information to plan promotional events in practice – Public Health is more than happy to support with this and arrange screening promotion events with representatives from the screening programme
- Get involved in the PCC (Practice Cancer Champion) programme that is run by Cancer Research UK and Public Health Stockport
- Consider embedding this short (1 minute 30) breast screening info video onto your social/media/website/ waiting room screens when you know your patients are being calledhttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lP_aK3m3ChE
- When patients are being called for screening you could put displays up in the waiting room
