Physical Health Checks for those with Learning Disabilities

Target Audience/Eligibility Criteria

Thus training is suitable for General Practitioners, Nurse Practitioners, Practice Nurses, Nurse Associates, Assistant Practitioners and Health Care Assistants.

 

Course Aim

This session aims to raise awareness of the importance of the annual health checks for people with a learning disability. The implementation of annual health checks for people with learning disabilities in England has been repeatedly recommended as one component of health policy responses to the poorer health of people with learning disabilities. In addition, the need to ensure that NHS screening programme is accessible and accessed to by those with Learning Disabilities. This session will highlight the underlying rationale for the use of annual checks including support to understand what a learning disability is, how to provide reasonable adjustments and understand the obligations of the Mental Capacity Acte and Accessible Information Standard.

 

Learning Objectives

Upon successful completion of this course delegates will:

  • Be able to demonstrate an understanding of learning disabilities and how these differ from learning difficulties
  • Have an understanding of the health needs of the people with a learning disability and how these differ from people without a learning disability
  • Have an increased ability to effectively communicate with people with a learning disability
  • Have gained knowledge of the health check system in relation to meeting the health needs of people with learning disabilities
  • Know how to explore ways to increase positive outcomes from health check appointments, including use of available support networks
  • Understand why it is so important that people with Learning Disabilities are supported to access the NHS Screening Programmes
  • Understand how to provide reasonable adjustments effectively
  • Understand your obligations under the Mental Capacity Act and Accessible Information Standard
