Venepuncture

Target Audience/Eligibility Criteria

This session is targeted at GPs, Practice Nurses, Assistant Practitioners, Health Care Assistants and Phlebotomists who will regularly perform this procedure.

Course Aim

This one day workshop is designed to equip the health care worker with the knowledge and skills to develop competence in relation to venepuncture.

Upon successful completion you will be equipped with the underlining theory and skills to gain competence under clinical supervision of a practitioner in your own practice.  Completion of a post course competency assessment document is necessary.

Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion of this course delegates will:

  • Be able to outline the outline the rationale for taking blood
  • Have an awareness of the anatomy of potential sites
  • Be able to safely prepare the site of the procedure, applying infection control and health and safety principles
  • Be able to discuss the latest guidance around safety devices and the EU Directive
  • Be able to prepare and inform their patient
  • Be able to describe the legal and ethical issues around this procedure
  • Utilise and dispose of the equipment safely
  • Be aware of the potential complications of this invasive technique
  • Be able to undertake labelling
  • Have the knowledge and skills to safely work towards competence

Cost

This session is free of charge for all delegates from Stockport General Practice.  For all other delegates the cost is £80 per person.

Booking Process/Additional Information 

  • Bookings for this course should be made via the Virtual College LMS: https://nhsgmstockport.vc-enable.co.uk/
  • Upon successful completion you will be equipped with the underlining theory and skills to gain competence under clinical supervision with either a competent Health Care Support Worker with a minimum of 5 years experience and a Level 3 Qualification in H&SC or an up to date registered practitioner in your own practice. Completion of a post course competency assessment document is necessary.

  • Competency assessment will be required following attendance at the programme before the delegate will be deemed as competent
  • It will be assumed that delegates are using the vacuum system within their practice. If they are using the Monovet system they should advise us when booking a place to ensure the relevant equipment is available throughout the training
  • Please note that it is an employer’s responsibility to ensure that individuals employed in any patient facing role (including receptionists) are up to date with the recommended vaccinations for healthcare staff as outlined in the Green Book https://www.gov.uk/government/publications/immunisation-of-healthcare-and-laboratory-staff-the-green-book-chapter-12
  • The National Patient Safety Agency advises that update training should be undertaken as a minimum 3 yearly
