Venepuncture Theory (e-learning)

Target Audience/Eligibility Criteria

The course is particularly aimed at Health Care Assistants who are new to their role or would like to refresh on the theoretical elements of venepuncture prior to attending the trainer-led sessions.  It would be useful for all clinical members of staff who are due to undertake venepuncture as part of their role within general practice prior to attending the taught sessions.

Course Aim

Venepuncture is one of the most common invasive procedures and this online training course has been developed with an intention of supporting Healthcare Professionals in the development of their clinical skills.  Understanding the theory prior to attending practical training will enable to the practitioner to have a deeper understanding of the subject.

Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion of this course delegates will:

  • Understand the legal and policy requirements
  • Be able to establish a baseline knowledge of the relevant anatomy & physiology
  • Be able to identify the contraindications for venepuncture
  • Have an increased awareness of infection control measures
  • Know the procedure for venepuncture
  • Be aware of possible complications

  • There is a 12 question assessment at the end of the learning, where you will need to achieve 75% pass mark
  • You must complete venepuncture practical training prior to any attempt to draw blood specimens. This online training course is to be used as a support for the practical training session and is not a substitute for attending the required venepuncture practical training session.
