Smoking Cessation – Very Brief Advice on Smoking (e-learning)

Target Audience/Eligibility Criteria

Completion of this short module is required for all staff who may instigate a quit attempt but do not assist with quit attempts. For those who do assist with quit attempts please see Smoking Cessation – Stop Smoking Training.

Course Aim

The NCSCT has developed a method for identifying effective behaviour change techniques (BCTs) for smoking cessation. Using this method they analysed a transcript of the content of the NCSCT training module on Very Brief Advice (VBA) on Smoking  for BCTs and compared these against a meta-analysis of brief opportunistic smoking cessation interventions.

Course Content:

The behaviour change techniques contained within the NCSCT Very Brief Advice (VBA) on Smoking training module which are supported by meta-analysis (i.e. are evidence-based) are:

  • Assess current and past smoking behaviour
  • Provide information on consequences of smoking and smoking cessation
  • Provide options for later/additional support
  • Advise on stop smoking medications
