Professional Leadership – The Edward Jenner Programme

Target Audience/Eligibility Criteria

This course is open to anyone but has been designed with health and care professionals in mind. It is aimed at those new to leadership who are entering into the uncertain and complex environment of leadership and practice.

The Edward Jenner programme will support you as you develop essential leadership skills; open to all, this programme leads to an NHS Leadership Academy award in Leadership Foundations.

If you want to feel more able to deal with the daily challenges of working in healthcare, better equipped to care for patients, lead services and provide leadership for those around you – supporting them to do their job better – the Edward Jenner programme is for you.

The programme has been designed with health and care staff, for everyone working in a health and care context. Highly practical and patient-focused, it’s a great way to understand the purpose, challenges and culture of the NHS.

It’s flexible and enlightening, helping you get a fresh perspective on the impact you have on the patient experience – either directly or indirectly.

This programme is for all colleagues who are new to leadership and are exploring what it means. It also acts as a preliminary learning programme for newly qualified nursing and clinical staff. Whether you’re new to health and care or an aspiring leader at the start of your journey, you’re the perfect candidate.

The Edward Jenner programme is for you if you’re:

  • From any clinical or non-clinical background
  • A newly-qualified clinician

Course Details

There are two levels within the Edward Jenner programme: Launch and Foundations.  The programme has been designed to offer flexibility; Launch takes up to five hours and Foundations is designed to be studied over six weeks.

  • Launch and Foundations modules are free to access and based online
  • The Edward Jenner programme leads to an NHS Leadership Academy Award in Leadership Foundations.

Launch

Launch contains the elements below, each of which contains film, activities and discussions to take part in; it takes around 5 hours to complete.

Foundations

There is approximately 35 hours of learning in Foundations, which can be completed in as little as six weeks. However participants are given the flexibility to set their own timeframes for completing the programme, which covers:

  • Understanding person-centred care
  • Is ‘patient experience’ a verbal analgesic?
  • Methods of understanding the patient experience
  • Leadership behaviours for person-centred care
  • The Francis Inquiry
  • Challenges in healthcare
  • Johari window – illustrating and improving self-awareness
  • Healthcare Leadership Model
  • Power and influence
  • Levels of listening
  • Giving and receiving feedback
  • Adaptive leadership
  • What next?

A final piece of written evidence looks at your leadership difference gained from this programme. We allow you some time to gather evidence for this. Submitting your leadership difference will enter you for a NHS Leadership Academy award in Leadership Foundations.
