Target Audience/Eligibility Criteria
This programme is open to all colleagues in Health and Social Care who are new to leadership and are exploring what it means. It also acts as a preliminary learning programme for newly qualified nursing and clinical staff. Whether you’re new to health and care or an aspiring leader at the start of your journey, you’re the perfect candidate. You will ideally have a role in a health and care setting tp participate in the activities on this programme.
The Edward Jenner programme will support you as you develop essential leadership skills; open to all, this programme leads to an NHS Leadership Academy award in Leadership Foundations.
If you want to feel more able to deal with the daily challenges of working in healthcare, better equipped to care for patients, lead services and provide leadership for those around you – supporting them to do their job better – the Edward Jenner programme is for you.
The programme has been designed with health and care staff, for everyone working in a health and care context. Highly practical and patient-focused, it’s a great way to understand the purpose, challenges and culture of the NHS.
It’s flexible and enlightening, helping you get a fresh perspective on the impact you have on the patient experience – either directly or indirectly.

The Edward Jenner programme is for you if you’re:
- From any clinical or non-clinical background
- A newly-qualified clinician
- New to/returning to a clinical role
- Aspiring to a leadership role

Course Details
The programme will support you as you develop essential leadership skills. The programme is a suite of short courses and begins with an introduction course and then is structured in two levels, designed to offer flexibility.
- Launch and Foundations modules are free to access and based online
- The Edward Jenner programme leads to an NHS Leadership Academy Award in Leadership Foundations.
An Introduction to personal development
You’ll develop an understanding of the process and levels of learning and development. This will help you determine your desired level of learning and articulate a learning goal to achieve. You’ll also understand the challenges you could face in your learning journey and identify ways to overcome them.
By the end of the course you will be able to:
- Explore the different levels at which we learn
- Identify the characteristics of positive workplace cultures
- Describe the NHS approach to leadership
- Identify learning goal and plan learning experiments
- Engage peers and managers in support of sustainable learning
Level 1 (course 1) – Exploring what leadership means to me
There is approximately 20 hours of learning, which can be completed in as little as four weeks. However participants are given the flexibility to set their own timeframes for completing the programme, which covers:
- An introduction to the method of study and the courses that make up the Edward Jenner programme
- The type of issues that leadership capabilities help with
- Methods of understanding the patient experience
- The concept of leadership
- Why leadership matters
- How to be authentic
- Why valuing difference matters and inclusive leadership
- The roots of resilient leaders
Level 1 (course 2) – Leading through relationships
There is approximately 25 hours of learning, which can be completed in as little as five weeks. However participants are given the flexibility to set their own timeframes for completing the programme, which covers:
- Understanding different perspectives
- How humans infer information
- How to have have influence
- Improving your emotional intelligence
- Avoiding a hero culture
- Leaders as hosts
- Access your leadership behaviours
- Know when to adapt your leadership to the needs of the situation
- How to share leadership
- How to reflect on feedback
- Understand power and how it flows
- Explore a future for your health and care system and consider the part you play
A final piece of written evidence looks at your leadership difference gained from this programme. We allow you some time to gather evidence for this. Submitting your leadership difference will enter you for a NHS Leadership Academy award in Leadership Foundations.
Course Duration
Launch takes up to five hours and Foundations is designed to be studied over six weeks.
