Primary Care and Pathology

Target Audience/Eligibility Criteria

This session is aimed at GPs, Nurse Practitioners, Practice Nurses, Assistant Practitioners and Health Care Assistants.

Course Aim   

This session aims to aims to give clarity around a range of the most common blood tests, to outline; why are they undertaken, how the samples should be dealt with, what the results indicate and what are normal values.  The blood tests being discussed will include:

  • Fbc
  • Ferritin
  • Folate
  • B12
  • UEs
  • LFTs
  • TFTs
  • Lipids
  • Hba 1c

The session will also aim to clarify around the new swabs for chlamydia and gonorrhoea and will cover when to swab and which swab.  Finally, the session will focus on the UTI antibiotic guidelines to provide guidance on when it is appropriate to treat or send a sample.
