Physical Health Checks for those with Learning Disabilities

Target Audience/Eligibility Criteria

This training is suitable for General Practitioners, Nurse Practitioners, Practice Nurses, Assistant Practitioners and Health Care Assistants.

Course Aim 

This session aims to raise awareness of the importance of the annual health check for people with a learning disability.  The implementation of annual health checks for people with learning disabilities in England has been repeatedly recommended as one component of health policy responses to the poorer health of people with learning disabilities.  This session will highlight the underlying rationale for the use of annual checks including support to understand what a learning disability is, how to provide reasonable adjustments and understand the obligations of the Mental Capacity Act and Accessible Information Standard.

Learning Objectives

Upon successful completion of this course delegates will:

  • Be able to demonstrate and understanding of learning disabilities and how these differ from learning difficulties
  • Have an understanding of the health needs of the people with a learning disability and how these differ from people without a learning disability
  • Have an increased ability to effectively communicate with people with a learning disability
  • Have gained knowledge of the health check system in relation to meeting the health needs of people with learning disabilities
  • Know how to explore ways to increase positive outcomes from health check appointments, including use of available support networks
  • Understand how to provide reasonable adjustments effectively
  • Understand your obligations under the Mental Capacity Act and Accessible Information Standard

This course is free of charge for all those who work in Stockport General Practices.
