Course Aim

The Centre for Pharmacy Postgraduate Education (CPPE) is part of the Manchester Pharmacy School, within the Faculty of Medical and Human Sciences at the University of Manchester. It is funded by Health Education England to provide educational solutions for the NHS pharmacy workforce to maximise its contribution to improving patient care.

The aim of this e-learning programme, which was developed by CPPE, is to support people and organisations who are considering, developing, authorising and using patient group directions (PGDs) to deliver NHS services in line with legislation and NICE medicines practice guideline (MPG2).

Learning Objectives

Upon successful completion of this module individuals will be able to:

  • Work with colleagues to determine whether a PGD is the most appropriate way to supply or administer a medicine in a particular clinical situation
  • Use current legislation and guidelines to develop and implement PGDs to ensure the patient gets timely access to safe and effective care
  • Apply the appropriate competency framework and governance arrangements within your professional responsibility to develop, authorise, use, review or update a PGD
  • Refer to and contribute to the local practice collection of PGDs on the NICE website
