Immunisation & Vaccination – Flu, Pneumococcal, Tetanus, Shingles and Covid Vaccines Initial Training For APs & HCAs

Target Audience/Eligibility Criteria

This training is aimed at Assistant Practitioners and Health Care Assistants who hold a Level 3 Qualification in Health & Social Care or equivalent, or who have been nominated by their Practice Manager(with the correct insurance/indemnity) and whose role involves administering Flu, Pneumococcal, Tetanus, Shingles and Covid vaccines or advising on vaccinations as part of their clinical practice.  The course provides theoretical and practical training on flu (including nasal flu), pneumococcal, Tetanus, shingles and Covid vaccinations and Management of Adverse Events.

As you will be aware the current Public Health England guidance  highlights the recommendation that only HCSWs who have achieved education and training to Level Three of the Qualifications and Credit Framework (QCF) or equivalent in England and Wales with at least 2 years’ experience as a HCSW should be considered for training in vaccine administration. HCSWs working at this level are likely to be at Level Three or above of the NHS Career Framework or the NHS Wales Skills and Career Development Framework for Clinical Healthcare Support Workers – https://www.gov.uk/government/publications/immunisation-training-of-healthcare-support-workers-national-minimum-standards-and-core-curriculum.  However due to lessons learnt during the pandemic we are awaiting updated guidance and are expecting amendments to the pre-requisites specified.   With this in mind we would like to offer practices the opportunity to get prepared for the Autumn/Winter flu season and offer training to people who may have previously fallen outside of the stipulated requirements.  However, it is vital that practices carefully consider who they put forward. This training is comprehensive and covers the area in some depth.  With this in mind, practices should put forward individuals who they feel have the aptitude to successfully complete this level of training and be mindful that any individual trained will be working under the indemnity of the registered practitioners within your practice upon completion.

This training must be followed by completion of the competency assessment toolkit. It will be the responsibility of the practice to ensure the delegate has the support of a registered, up to date, health care professional to support the delegate with the completion of the competency assessment toolkit to ensure competency.
