Target Audience/Eligibility Criteria
Health Care Assistants or those moving into a Health Care Assistant role who wishes to develop their knowledge and skills.
Course Aim:
This two day course combined with effective support and coaching in the workplace and additional e-learning aims to enable Health Care Assistants to deliver services with evidence based underpinning knowledge. Upon successful completion delegates will be equipped with the underlining theory and skills to gain competence under clinical supervision of a practitioner in their own practice.
Course Content:
The content of this course is in-line with the National Minimum Standards for Health Care Assistants. The course will include:-
- Role of the Health Care Worker and overview of the HCA national minimum standards. Introduction to the Care Certificate
- Introduction to the Care Certificate and Higher Development Award
- Personal development. 6 C’s. Reflective practice
- Effective communication and customer service
- Person centred care and support
- Duty of care
- Defensible documentation and record keeping
- Delegation, accounta
- Costbility and consent
- Awareness of health promotion / Health Chat
- Blood pressure monitoring and normal values
- Understanding and reading temperatures
- The pulse and respiration. Monitoring and normal values
- Measuring oxygen saturation
- Understanding urinalysis and obtaining an MSSU
- Infection prevention and control and hand washing technique overview
- Obtaining a capillary blood sample to check for blood glucose levels

Cost
The maximum cost per person for this training will be £166.00. This cost could be reduced if we receive a high number of bookings. The cost of this training will be deducted from your next practice payment from NHS GM (see additional information below).
Booking Process/Additional Information
- To book a place an email must be sent to gmicb-sto.learningdevelopment@nhs.net from either the Practice Manager or Lead GP confirming names, roles and contact details of those that require places. By submitting this booking request, you are confirming that you have agreed a process to deduct any agreed costs from your next payment from NHS GM.
- If an individual is unable to attend an event for any reason, the learning & development team should be contacted via email on gmicb-sto.learningdevelopment@nhs.net as soon as possible (prior to the final date for cancellations – Friday 15th August 2025)
- Delegates must also complete the Venepuncture training which runs separately from this course and other e-learning including; equality and diversity, information governance, safeguarding adults, safeguarding children L2 and infection prevention and control. Full details will be provided.
Delegates will be assessed and receive competency sign off in their practice setting by their mentor
