E-Learning Information

There is a range of e-learning that is accessible to you, below is just a sample of the provision that is available.

Virtual College

Stockport ICB has invested in a Learning Management System to manage the bookings for the commissioned courses for the general practice workforce in Stockport.  The system also provides a range of e-learning which is accessible to the Stockport General Practice workforce, some of which is funded by Stockport ICB and is therefore free of charge to the practices in Stockport.  The funded sessions include:

  • Health and Safety in Healthcare
  • Fire Safety and Evacuation
  • Lone Working in Healthcare
  • Slips, Trips and Falls
  • Customer Care
  • Moving and Handling Objects and People
  • Conflict Resolution for Healthcare
  • Equality and Diversity in the Workplace
  • Infection Prevention and Control – Clinical
  • Mental Capacity Act
  • Safeguarding Adults
  • Safeguarding Children – Level 1 and Level 2
  • Information Governance

Bookings for any of these sessions should be made via the Virtual College LMS: https://nhsgmstockport.vc-enable.co.uk/.

There are a range of other e-learning packages that are available but would be payable by the practice.

Practice Managers can also run reports on their practice workforce to see what has been completed.  The full user guide giving full instructions on how to navigate the site and utilise the full functionality of the system are available on the home page of the Virtual College system under ‘Resources’.

National Skills Academy (was Skills for Health)

Please note there is now a charge for completing this e-learning.  This charge will be the responsibility of the practice and will not be funded by Stockport ICB.

The National Skills Academy provides a range of e-learning courses which are compliant with the Core Skills Training Framework Outcomes.  The Framework was developed as a national initiative by Skills for Health, to help reduce duplication, as well as time and money spent completing statutory and mandatory courses across the health sector.

E-learning is available which covers nine areas of statutory and mandatory practice set out in the Core Skills Training Framework and there are additional e-learning packages available too.

Their courses can be accessed anywhere, anytime, and are self-paced, so your staff can work on training anytime. Learners can bookmark their training and are supported with a dedicated support helpline.

As employers, you can track the training your workforce is accessing, monitor their progress and run reports on completion rates and progress providing you with real-time information to aid workforce planning.  The e-learning and the reporting facilities are free of charge to NHS employees.

It is important that practices and individuals register correctly.  Individuals should:-

  • Access http://www.nsahealth.org.uk/e-learning
  • Register and use their e-mail address as their user name
  • Go to ‘Region’ and choose ‘North West’
  • Choose ‘GP Practices’ and select the correct practice from the list.
  • If the correct practice name is not show the practice manager should contact the National Skills Academy register the practice on elearning@nsahealth.org.uk or to 0844 770 3770.  The practice will then be registered and this will enable the Practice Manager and/or a designated other to download reports on their practices progress and completions.

E-learning for Healthcare

E-learning for Healthcare (e-LfH) is an award winning e-learning programme providing national quality assured on-line training content for the healthcare profession.  The e-learning programmes are free of charge and can be accessed via www.e-lfh.org.uk .  Individuals will need to register before accessing the available learning.

E-GP

Within E-learning for Healthcare is e-GP the on-line e-learning resource for NHS General Practitioners and doctors undertaking specialty training for UK general practice.  It has been jointly developed by the Royal College of General Practitioners (RCGP) and e-Learning for Healthcare (e-LfH).

Launched in July 2009, e-GP: e-Learning for General Practice is a comprehensive, free-to-access, high quality programme of online learning sessions structured around the GP curriculum, developed in collaboration between the Royal College of General Practitioners and e-Learning for Healthcare (e-LfH).

The e-GP resource provides a programme of e-learning modules covering the RCGP curriculum. Each module is made up of reflective and interactive e-learning sessions that enhance GP training and support preparation for appraisal and revalidation.

Access to e-GP is available free of charge to those who work within the NHS. Go to https://www.e-lfh.org.uk/programmes/general-practitioners/ .  If you have already received an email confirming your e-GP username and password, click ‘Log in to your e-learning’ in the top right hand corner of this page and enter these details. To obtain your e-GP user name and password, simply enter your details by going to the above link and clicking on ‘register’.

Royal College of General Practitioners

The Royal College of General Practitioners (RCGP) is the UK body responsible for setting the standards for general practice education, training, Revalidation and the MRCGP examination.

Their online e-learning materials are developed and badged by the experienced e-learning team at the RCGP. The team have developed and published a range of high quality RCGP online courses and certifications to support CPD and revalidation. The intended audience for the e-learning materials are GPs and primary healthcare professionals, GP Specialty Trainees and GP Educators. Their materials are written to reflect UK practice.

All RCGP courses currently go through a peer-review process and quality assurance check to ensure they are of the highest quality. However, best medical practice can change over time and it is the user’s own responsibility to make his or her own professional judgement before applying the information contained in the educational materials to patient care.

Existing RCGP members will be automatically registered.  All other healthcare professionals, trainees and students can register for a RCGP e-learning account, which provides FREE access to selected RCGP courses and updates.  To access the e-learning please follow this link – http://elearning.rcgp.org.uk/

Education for Health

Education for Health is a leading UK-based educational charity, working to transform the lives of people living with long term health conditions.  Their free eLearning resources are available to support your development within clinical practice. Supporting Children’s Health: Asthma

This free online resource is a public access site with content developed by expert health professionals in consultation with teachers, sports coaches and children’s activity leaders. Anyone who uses the resource will gain the knowledge and confidence to support children with asthma, deal with emergency situations and could help save lives. Access it here.

Primary Care Respiratory Academy

The Primary Care Respiratory Academy (PCRA) is a community of primary care health professionals and those who commission respiratory services. They work with the Primary Care Respiratory Society (PCRS), the UK-wide professional society supporting high-value, patient-centred respiratory care.

Together they provide expert-guided learning and peer-to-peer exchange through live meetings and online resources. They have a number of free CPD modules that can be accessed here and include:

  • The value of tests in respiratory disease – This module will review the use of medical tests in the diagnosis of respiratory diseases.
  • Supported self-management in COPD – This module will evaluate key aspects in the self-management of COPD by patients.
  • Management of co-morbidities in asthma – This case-based module will guide you through the latest evidence in managing comorbidities in asthma
  • Management of co-morbidities in COPD – This case-based module will guide you through the latest evidence in managing comorbidities in COPD
  • Smoking cessation – This key questions module will examine the current approaches to smoking cessation
  • Spirometry – This key questions module will explore the main principles of performing and interpreting spirometry in primary care.

  • Supported asthma self-management – This module presents cases and questions relating to asthma self-management

Primary Care Genetics

As part of an EU ERASMUS+ project comprising 6 EU countries with involvement from primary care clinicians, genetic healthcare professionals and education specialists, Plymouth University have developed a series of online educational modules for all healthcare professionals working in primary care. These modules are completely free, case-based and accessible on desktops and mobile devices. Modules available include detecting genetic problems in children, inherited cardiac conditions (with a separate module on FH), colorectal cancer, breast and ovarian cancer and four modules on pregnancy-related issues. The modules are   currently accredited for CPD by the European Accreditation Network.

BMJ Learning offers free high-quality continuing medical education for doctors and other healthcare professionals with BMJ Membership.
