Target Audience/Eligibility Criteria
General Practitioners and GP ST3s
Course Aim
The aim of the workshop is to help participant’s communicate more effectively and more confidently, with patients, families and other colleagues, with a particular focus on palliative and end of life care. The course content includes;
- A presentation of the evidence around the importance of communication skills and eliciting patients’ concerns
- Discussion of why health professionals avoid addressing patients’ concerns and emotions
- Identification of skills known to help elicit concerns and feelings and those known to block them
- An interactive demonstration of the key skills in practice by the facilitators.
- Role plays that aim to replicate relevant, realistic situations in which patient concerns are elicited and emotions addressed. Role play is undertaken in small groups in an informal and relaxed setting
- Identification and discussion of referral routes when patients with problems are identified
- Provision of a further supervision session to consolidate learning.
Learning Outcomes
Upon successful completion of this course delegates will:
- Feel more confident and more able to acknowledge patient/relative’s concerns and worries
- Tailor information to the needs of the patient /carer.
- Refer patients or relatives on for further help, when appropriate.
