Target Audience/Eligibility Criteria
This course is suitable for GPs and Practice Nurses who undertake cervical cytology sampling and have previously attended a recognised cervical cytology sample takers theoretical and practical course.
Course Aim
This course aims to update the delegates’ knowledge and skills in the area of cervical cytology.
Learning Outcomes
Upon successful completion of this course delegates will:
- Be able to describe the current developments in the NHS Cervical Screening Programme
- Be able to discuss recent literature relevant to sample taking, sampling devices and women’s needs
- Understand the changes to local screening policies and procedures
- Identify personal learning needs

- The NHS Cervical Screening Programme (NHSCSP) is pleased to announce the release of an e- learning resource which is free of charge for cervical sample taker 3 yearly update training. The module is hosted on the Health Education England’s website e-learning for Healthcare (e-LfH) – https://e-lfh.org.uk/programmes/nhs-screening-programmes/ . The resource is part of a suite of e-learning materials for staff working across all NHS screening programmes. The resource is designed to meet the cervical sample taker 3 yearly update training requirements as set out in the NHSCSP Guidance for the training of cervical sample takers. It is anticipated that the module will facilitate improved and flexible access to update training to meet the needs of the sample taker population.

- Quality Assurance recommends that all update training is delivered with a blended approach. In order to achieve this, the screening and immunisation team will continue to attend practice nurse forums, GP educational sessions and sexual health provider sessions in order to provide an overview of coverage and local incidents within the programme.
