Cervical Cytology – Theoretical Course for Novice Sample Takers

Target Audience/Eligibility Criteria

Any registered nurse, doctor or physician associate who will be becoming actively involved in the Cervical Screening Programme. As a large component of the course entails sample taking, it is expected that the applicant will have access to a clinical setting for training.  Following attendance on this course there are additional elements that need to be completed, details below.

Learning Outcomes

  • To ensure that on completion of the course the Health Care Professional (HCP) is competent in taking cervical samples for the purpose of the NHS Cervical Screening Programme (NHSCSP).
  • To provide HCPs involved in the NHSCSP with a sound theoretical base to support the practice of sample taking
  • To ensure that HCPs involved in the NHSCSP are competent in obtaining high quality cervical screening samples through supervised practice and independent external assessment of competence according to national benchmarks.
  • To encourage HCPs to review their competencies regularly as part of their own professional development

Course Content  

This Nine Month Training Component Includes:

  • Attending a course covering the theory of the NHS Cervical Screening Programme in line with the NHSCSP (two days)
  • Arrange and complete an independent external assessment
  • On completion of all of the above, the participant will submit a portfolio of evidence

Course Duration

  • It is expected that the student will complete all components within 9 months post attendance of the two day theoretical study course. In exceptional circumstances an extension of a maximum 3 months may be granted upon application.

Cost

£550.00 per delegate and is payable in advance of the course..  Please note this training is not funded by Greater Manchester ICB (Stockport).  Potentially this training could be funded from the Continuous Professional Development (CPD) budget, for those roles that are eligible – All Registered Nurses, Nurse Associates, Paramedics and Physiotherapists.   • For those undertaking the NEPSEC training the final assessment costs are incorporated into the course cost.  For delegates who are undertaking alternative cervical cytology training they will be expected to fund the final assessment costs (in the region of £88).
