Cervical Cytology Mentor Training

Target Audience/Eligibility Criteria

This course is suitable for any registered nurse who is currently actively involved in supporting students undertaking the practical elements of a cervical smear training programme or any registered nurse who would like to undertake the supporting of students undertaking the practical elements of a cervical smear training programme but has not done so previously.

A Mentor must be a registered nurse, doctor or physician associate. Mentors should have effective teaching and communication skills and ideally hold a relevant mentoring and/or teaching qualification. They must:

  • Be a practicing cervical sample taker
  • Have had minimum 12 months continuous experience following completion of initial cervical sample taker training
  • Have a minimum of 50 adequate samples following completion of initial cervical sample taker training
  • Have undertaken cervical screening update training at least every three years

Course Aim 

This workshop aims to provide a theoretical update around supporting best practice in relation to the practical elements of a cervical smear training programme.  Trainee cervical screening sample takers are required to identify a suitable mentor, from within their place of work, before they commence the course. This is for the support required during practical observation and training.  Mentors should be an experienced cervical sample taker working at the trainee’s practice or clinic, who are able to provide regular support to the trainee, as they commence cervical screening.

Learning outcomes

Upon successful completion of this course delegate will:

  • Be able to outline the factors that influence learning clinical skills in practice
  • Understand how to create a supportive learning environment
  • Have a range of strategies to support students undertaking cervical smear training in practice
  • Be able to refer students to relevant learning resources
  • Understand the professional responsibilities of mentoring students in practice

Course Duration

2 hours 30 minutes for those new to mentoring and for experienced mentors.

  • A Mentor should undertake a cervical screening update training course at least every three years. As practicing cervical sample takers they should ensure continued competence in accordance with their professional code of conduct. They should undertake continuous self-evaluation. They should audit and reflect upon their individual rates of inadequate and abnormal test results, compared with the rates reported by the local laboratory.
