Cancer in Teenagers and Young People

Cancers in children and young people are rare but potentially fatal. GPs may have a key role in assisting timely diagnosis and in supporting the families of affected children and young people. This course will support GPs, GP trainees, nurse practitioners and allied health care professionals in being able to identify symptoms and signs which could indicate a malignancy in a child or young person. This course was developed in partnership with Teenage Cancer Trust and CLIC Sargent.

Blood Cancer

Primary care health professionals play a crucial role in diagnosing blood cancer early. We know that patient presentation delays and the nature of acute conditions contributes to emergency diagnosis rates. But, the fact that you may only see one case of blood cancer every two years, adds challenges, especially as the symptoms are notoriously vague and non-specific.  As a result, blood cancers have a higher rate of emergency diagnosis than other cancer types. Emergency presentation rates account for 30% of blood cancers diagnosed, compared to  22% across all cancers. The highest emergency presentation rates for any cancer type occur in acute lymphoblastic leukaemia (ALL), at 65% of patients. Early diagnosis has a significant impact on both survival rates and patient experience. Leukaemia Care has developed online eLearning modules and online webinars in partnership with the Royal College of General Practitioners (RCGP). Our online eLearning modules and online webinars are accredited with CPD points. In-person workshops have been cancelled and we are holding online webinars with the RCGP Faculties and gateway C which will be 60-90 minutes long.
