Immunisation & Vaccination – Flu Immunisation Programme Update (e-learning)

Target Audience/Eligibility Criteria

This training is aimed at GPs, Nurse Practitioners and Practice Nurses whose role involves administering flu  immunisations or advising on flu vaccinations as part of their clinical practice.  It can also be used by Health Care Assistants and Assistant Practitioners who hold a Level 3 Qualification in Health & Social Care or equivalent, who have been nominated by their Practice Manager (with the correct insurance/indemnity) and whose role involves delivering the national flu immunisation programme.

Please note those who are new to immunising MUST complete a 2 or 3 day face to face fundamentals of immunisation course, as is set out in the ‘National Minimum Standards and Core Curriculum for Immunisation Training for Registered Healthcare Practitioners’.

Course Aim

Health Education England elearning for healthcare (HEE elfh) has worked with the UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA) to update the Flu Immunisation elearning programme to ensure it is up-to-date for the 2023 to 2024 flu season.

With the ongoing global COVID-19 pandemic, it is really important that this year’s annual flu vaccination programme is safely and effectively delivered to as many of those eligible as possible to protect those at risk.

It is expected that the seasonal influenza virus will co-circulate with the COVID-19 virus during this winter and, as influenza activity levels were extremely low during the past two flu seasons, it is expected that there will be lower population immunity against influenza. With social mixing and social contact returning towards pre-pandemic norms as the non-pharmaceutical interventions to prevent the spread of the coronavirus, such as shielding and social distancing, that were in place during the previous flu seasons have been lifted, it is important that those who are particularly at risk from the complications of flu are protected through vaccination.

It is therefore crucial that those giving flu vaccines are confident, competent and have up-to-date knowledge about the vaccine(s) they are giving. The Flu Immunisation elearning resource is designed to provide all healthcare practitioners involved in delivering the national flu immunisation programme with the knowledge they need to confidently promote high uptake of flu vaccination and administer the flu vaccines to those who need them.

Course Content

The elearning course consists of three knowledge sessions and three assessment sessions. All those undertaking this elearning should complete the Core Knowledge session and accompanying assessment as this is designed to provide essential knowledge about what flu is and the rationale for, and design of, the annual flu programme. Depending on which session(s) is relevant to your role, you should then complete one or both subsequent knowledge and assessment sessions which provide more detailed information about the live and inactivated flu vaccines.

Available sessions include:

 Pre-requisites:

Health Care Assistants and Assistant Practitioners who hold a Level 3 Qualification in Health & Social or equivalent, who have been nominated by their Practice manager (with the correct insurance/indemnity).

Those who are new to immunising MUST complete a 2- or 3-day face to face fundamentals of immunisation course, as is set out in the ‘National Minimum Standards and Core Curriculum for Immunisation Training for Registered Healthcare Practitioners’.
