Contraception, Reproduction and Sexual Health Modules – CRASH 2

Target Audience/Eligibility Criteria

This unit is designed for:

  • Qualified health care professionals who are undertaking or have completed CRASH 1 (Theory)
  • Qualified health care professionals who regularly work with patients providing sexual health services in primary or secondary care e.g. Practice nurses, Gynae nurses, health care professionals working in GUM, midwives etc.

Course Aim

The overall aim of this unit is to develop the practitioner’s knowledge and understanding and application of the principles underpinning sexual health work within the context of fertility control and health protection.

Learning Outcomes

On successful completion of this unit students will be able to:

  • Critically evaluate the main concepts and principles associated with contraception and reproductive sexual health care.
  • Demonstrate critical appraisal and application of evidence based practice.
  • Critically review the needs of the client group in accordance with national guidelines.

CRASH 2 is a practice based unit, with no formal teaching sessions. Students are offered 2 tutorials- one at the start of the unit and 1 prior to submission of the portfolio.

Cost

£400, this is not funded by GM Locality. It could potentially be funded out of the national CPD funding but this will need to be applied for on an individual basis. Please note there are additional placement fees of approximately £400 – £600 which will not be covered by any available funding –  please check with the placement provider of the exact cost. This is normally paid for by either the employer or the individual.

Booking Process/Additional Information

  • CRASH 2 is a practice based unit, with no formal teaching sessions. Students are offered 2 tutorials- one at the start of the unit and 1 prior to submission of the portfolio.
  • As students have different levels of access to reproductive and sexual health services to meet the 36 hours in practice, each student will have an individual submission date agreed with the course tutor at the first tutorial.
  • Students are strongly advised to ensure their reproductive and sexual health services placement(s) is secure before applying, to ensure they meet the 36 practice hours.
  • Students must undertake 36 hours of practice in reproductive and sexual health services.  Please note there are additional placement fees of approximately £400 – £600 which will not be covered by any available funding – please check with the placement provider of the exact cost. This is normally paid for by either the employer or the individual.
  • The practice based competencies, outlined in the portfolio of learning, MUST be signed off by a mentor.
  • The mentor must be working in reproductive and sexual health services and oversee the student’s CRASH 2 placement(s).
  • Students will be required to complete a written portfolio

Entry requirements:

  • CRASH 1 (theoretical underpinnings) must be successfully completed before students can undertake CRASH 2.
  • The student must provide a reference from the mentor that clearly states the mentor will support the student over the 36 hours placement and sign off the competencies within the portfolio.
