Chronic Kidney Disease Study Day

Target Audience/Eligibility Criteria

This study day is suitable for GPs, Nurse Practitioners, Practice Nurses or any healthcare professional involved with the follow up of health checks or who monitor patients with diabetes, hypertension and people with established CVD.

Course Overview

This study day covers the latest NICE Guidance for CKD, so from diagnosis to the appropriate management principles for CKD in primary care is explained with the very important aspect of when to refer included. Avoiding acute kidney injury (AKI) is a vital aspect of primary care management of hypertension, CKD & simply the elderly population. This study day demystifies this & offers practical solutions.

Course Content

This course will include:

  • Why is CKD important to the individual, the practice & the NHS?
  • The functions of the healthy kidney – made simple
  • Monitoring kidney function – the approach in primary care & why this matters
  • Diagnosis & staging of CKD in primary care & QOF
  • Management of CKD in primary care therapies & monitoring
  • Acute Kidney Injury (AKI) explained & drug holidays
  • Explaining CKD to the patient
  • Clinical cases

Learning Objectives

At the end of the day you will understand:

  • The importance of CKD & relevance in prevention of CVD
  • The benefits & limitations of testing renal function
  • The function of the normal kidney & what goes wrong in CKD
  • The rationale behind National Clinical Guidelines for the management of CKD
