Axial Spondyloarthritis (Ankylosing Spondylitis) Study Session.

Target Audience/Eligibility Criteria

This study day is suitable for GPs, Advanced Nurse Practitioners or First Contact Physiotherapists.

Course Overview:

Axial spondyloarthritis (formerly known as ankylosing spondylitis) is an inflammatory back pain condition that affects 1 in 200 adults in the UK. It takes on average 8.5 years for these patients to be diagnosed, a large proportion of this is within primary care. This study session aims to improve your awareness and knowledge by covering the signs and symptoms associated with the condition and give you the confidence to know when it is suitable to refer to rheumatology.

Course Content

This course will include:

  • What is Axial Spondyloarthritis?
  • What are the signs and symptoms?
  • When to refer to Rheumatology.
  • Investigations at primary care level.
  • Clinical case studies.

Learning Objectives

At the end of the session, you will understand:

  • What the signs and symptoms of Axial Spondyloarthritis are.
  • Know when to refer.
  • Know what investigations need to be done at primary care level.

James Holland First contact physiotherapist & NASS Champion in Primary Care and Dr Alma Hatley, GP ST3

James is currently involved in a 2-year quality improvement project working alongside NASS, a charity specific to Axial Spondyloarthritis with the aim to reduce the delay to diagnosis of this condition by improving the knowledge of primary care clinicians.
