Hypertension, Hypotension and the Difference a Couple of Letter Can Make

Target Audience:

Receptionists and Administrators

Course Aims:

This course aims to provide basic terminology on how clinical words are put together, this is helpful for anyone working with medical information but particularly those working on Docman, secretarial support teams or those on reception who can understand some of the terms used by clinicians and patients when undertaking triage.

This will include:

  • Prefixes
  • Suffixes – how they are used
  • Acronyms
  • Hospital Departments
  • An overview of some body systems, delivered so that admin teams can understand the language and terminology e.g. components of blood and blood tests and the cardiovascular and digestive systems
  • Some of the different investigations requested in primary care and what they do
  • How to understand different words that patients use to describe their symptoms and what might be useful for the clinician to know (e.g. Pain location and description)

Learning Objectives:

At the end of the session delegates will have an increased confidence in using medical terminology, searching for medical terminology on the internet and working out what a particular term means. They will understand some common acronyms, how medical words are structured and have a go at making some words from prefixes and suffixes. This will equip them with the knowledge and understanding so that they don’t book a patient for anti-natal care but for ante-natal care and that its important to note that someone’s pain is “cramping” rather than “sharp” and is in the umbilical region.
