Assessment and treatment of UTI is generally a straightforward GP consultation. However, UTI\u2019s account for 55% of the cases of gram-negative blood stream infections, which have a 30% mortality rate.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Most cases of gram-negative blood stream infections are of\u00a0<strong>community<\/strong>\u00a0onset. Over half are due to\u00a0<strong>UTI\u2019s<\/strong>. Most are seen in people living at\u00a0<strong>home<\/strong>\u00a0(not in care homes) and most are\u00a0<strong>not<\/strong>\u00a0catheter associated.\u00a0 Most are seen in the patients we see day in, day out in primary care.\u00a0 Furthermore,\u00a0<strong>trimethoprim resistance<\/strong>\u00a0is rising and our first line antibiotics are changing.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">During the summer heat wave, Manchester saw a spike in cases of gram-negative blood stream infections, most likely as a result of poorer hydration and more UTIs.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As a result of resistance\u00a0Trimethoprim is no longer recommended as first line empirical treatment for urinary tract infections.
