It helps the health and social care system manage winter pressures by helping to reduce demand for GP consultations and likelihood of hospitalisation. Vaccinating health and care workers also plays an important role in helping to prevent transmission of flu, protecting themselves and those they care for.

It is therefore crucial that those giving flu vaccines are confident, competent and have up-to-date knowledge about the vaccine(s) they are giving. The Flu Immunisation elearning resource is designed to provide all healthcare practitioners involved in delivering the national flu immunisation programme with the knowledge they need to confidently promote high uptake of flu vaccination and administer the flu vaccines to those who need them.

Course Content

The elearning course consists of three knowledge sessions and three assessment sessions. All those undertaking this elearning should complete the Core Knowledge session and accompanying assessment as this is designed to provide essential knowledge about what flu is and the rationale for, and design of, the annual flu programme. Depending on which session(s) is relevant to your role, you should then complete one or both subsequent knowledge and assessment sessions which provide more detailed information about the live and inactivated flu vaccines.

Available sessions include:

Core Knowledge for Flu Immunisers – Designed to provide healthcare practitioners with the core knowledge base they need to promote high uptake of flu vaccination and effectively deliver the flu vaccine programme

Core Knowledge: Self-assessment – A series of multiple-choice questions to test your core knowledge of the flu vaccination programme

Inactivated Flu Vaccines – Provides information about the inactivated flu vaccines and their use in the national flu programme

Inactivated Flu Vaccines: Self-assessment – A series of multiple-choice questions to test your knowledge of inactivated flu vaccines

Live Flu Vaccine – Provides information about the use of live intranasal flu vaccine given to eligible children in the childhood flu programme

Live Flu Vaccine – Self-assessment – A series of multiple-choice questions to test your knowledge of the live flu vaccine

Pre-requisites:

Health Care Assistants and Assistant Practitioners who hold a Level 3 Qualification in Health & Social or equivalent, who have been nominated by their Practice manager (with the correct insurance/indemnity).

Those who are new to immunising MUST complete a 2- or 3-day face to face fundamentals of immunisation course, as is set out in the ‘National Minimum Standards and Core Curriculum for Immunisation Training for Registered Healthcare Practitioners’.

Course Duration

This is e-learning and is variable depending on the knowledge and experience of the learner

Trainer/Facilitator – E Learning for Healthcare (E-LfH)

Date/Time/Venue

It is e-learning so can be accessed at any time.

Cost

There is no charge to access this training.

Booking Process/Additional Information

Click here for more information and to access the programme or alternatively click on the above links

To contact the Greater Manchester Area, screening & Immunising Team with a vaccine & immunisation enquiry please contact – england.gmsit@nhs.net or call 0113 825 5197.
