{"id":12329,"date":"2020-07-03T16:04:37","date_gmt":"2020-07-03T15:04:37","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.stockportccg.nhs.uk\/practicehub\/?page_id=12329"},"modified":"2022-02-02T15:08:59","modified_gmt":"2022-02-02T15:08:59","slug":"gp-medical-assistant","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/www.stockportpracticehub.co.uk\/practicehub\/workforce-development\/non-medical-career-pathway\/gp-medical-assistant\/","title":{"rendered":"GP \/ Medical Assistant"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"vc_row wpb_row vc_row-fluid vc_custom_1584626911080 vc_row-has-fill\"><div class=\"wpb_column vc_column_container vc_col-sm-12\"><div class=\"vc_column-inner\"><div class=\"wpb_wrapper\">\n\t<div class=\"wpb_text_column wpb_content_element \" >\n\t\t<div class=\"wpb_wrapper\">\n\t\t\t<p><strong>Summary of the Role:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong><em>What is it?<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The GP Assistant (GPA) is a role that was created in order to relieve some of the pressure on GPs. \u00a0Former RCGP Chair Dr Maureen Baker says the assistants would be \u2018a cross between a healthcare assistant and a doctor\u2019s PA\u2019 which could provide a \u2018short term injection of support\u2019 for general practice.<\/p>\n<p><strong><em>What do GP Assistants do in practice?<\/em><\/strong><strong><em>\u00a0<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>GP Assistants (also known as Medical Assistants) support doctors in the smooth running of their surgery by handling the routine administration and some basic clinical duties enabling the GP to focus on the patient.<\/p>\n<p>As a GP Assistant you will be trained to help with:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Sorting all clinical post and prioritising<\/li>\n<li>Extracting all information from clinical letters that needs coding<\/li>\n<li>Dealing with all routine clinical post directly e.g. DNA letters, 2WW etc.<\/li>\n<li>Arranging appointments, referrals and follow up appointments of patients<\/li>\n<li>Preparing patients prior to going in to see the GP, taking a brief history and basic readings in readiness for the GP appointment.<\/li>\n<li>Dipping urine, taking blood pressure, ECGs &amp; phlebotomy<\/li>\n<li>Completing basic (non-opinion) forms for the GP to approve and sign such as insurance forms, mortgage forms e.g. ESA113 etc<\/li>\n<li>Explaining treatment procedures to patients including arranging follow up appointments<\/li>\n<li>Helping the GP liaise with outside agencies i.e. getting an on call doctor on the phone to ask advice or arrange admission while the GP can continue with their consultation(s)<\/li>\n<li>Support the GP with immunisations\/wound care<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong> Entry criteria:\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>We would expect that the candidate is already considered competent in good patient care from their experience as members of a GP practice and be DBS checked to an enhanced level.\u00a0The candidate must have a named GP mentor who will be responsible for supporting them through their competencies. Half a day working through the competencies on the online portal and writing up your evidence and half a day gaining hands on experience with their GP mentor.\u00a0 GP mentors may second GPAs to the practice nurse to help them train in areas relating to simple clinical duties such as blood pressures but they will ultimately be responsible for signing the GPA as competent.<\/p>\n<p>This is a HEE funded project and as such bares no cost to the practice\/learner. In fact your practice will be eligible for \u00a31700 per candidate in recognition of the clinical time given to support learners and any training outlay, such as phlebotomy, you may decide to undertake.
